There has been a tremendous amount of work in major thrust areas of research in the department. It includes
Development and transfer of technology relevant for small scale industry in terms of modification and knowledge based information for the use of
- Eco friendly products and process
- Development of data bank of different dye classes
- Modification and evaluation of the properties of textiles
Studies have been done on processing of fabrics like cotton, wool and silk using an eco-friendly approach. Enzymes for processing, natural dyes for various substrates have been used and data bank of various dye classes has been developed.
Cataloguing and Documentation of textile Arts as many of the Indian traditional textile arts are becoming extinct. A major part of the research is directed towards documenting traditional costumes and textiles. Inspirations from the same are used for developing contemporary design. Many motifs of Indian textiles (birds, mango agnatic life) have been studied with respect to their development expression, symbolizing and form.
Designing Garments for special needs: The interdisciplinary approach towards the research has lead to many creations to special felt needs of certain section of society with a view to read out to the disabled section of the society, clothing has been designed for people with specific disabilities garments for both children and adults have been development keeping in mind the details and features reside by them
Standardization of measurements of development of commercial patterns: Status have been on to the create a data bank on anthropometrics measurements of boys, girls and adults commercial patterns have been developed after evaluating and modifying the drafts for the Indian woman.
Preparation of information, education and communication material: IEC material has been created for Indian consumers. Ready Reckoners have been created for dress material and household textiles.
Marketing related studies: A lot of research has been targeted towards understanding and exploring the area of marketing of textiles. Concepts like quality control exports, competitiveness, RMG sector, entry of foreign brands, consumers perception etc have been explained in details.
