The department of textiles and clothing was established in 1987 with the introduction of Master's programme. At the undergraduate level the subject is offered both at the Honours and Pass course levels. Doctoral studies are also being taken up in various subject areas. The departmental laboratories that are well equipped and library with latest collection of books enriched the excellent academic programme. The qualified and experienced faculty is an additional asset of the department.
Significant the venture to provide professional competency has resulted in students being gainfully employed as designers, exports executives, Merchandisers, Managers, academicians, researchers and Entrepreneurs. The curriculum has vast theoretical base, supported by strong practical knowledge and complemented by seminar, dissertation, outstretch programmes, internship and field placements. The students are gainfully employed in the following areas:
RESEARCH: The curriculum covers the subjects of dyeing and processing of textiles, anthropometry documents of designs etc. Due to this broad academic base the students take up jobs as research assistants in academic and research institutes like IIT Delhi, Northern India Textiles Research Association (NITRA), and wool Research Association (WRA). The projects related to preparation of fabrics for dyeing and printing, dyeing of silk, wool and synthetics with natural dyes, application of eco - friendly finishes on different substrates are handled by the students. Many a time the work they do under a project is converted into their Ph.D. study.
ACADEMICS: The students after their Master's programme need to clear the UGC National Eligibility test (NET) to qualify for the lecturer ship at the university level. Delhi University, Baroda University, Agricultural Universities and other regional universities offer the posts of lecturers for which our students are capable. Other upcoming UGC recognized institutes like Rai Foundation are also selecting M.Sc. students in their teaching faculty. Institutions like NIFT which has six branches in India also has many of our students on their permanent faculty. Private fashion institutions like Pearl, NIFD, IIFT, Wigan and Leigh and various Poly Techniques also take up our post-graduate students.
Besides teaching at the college level, the graduates and post graduates after pursuing their Bachelor's degree in Education are engaged as TGT or PGT Home Science teachers respectively in schools. Recently CBSE has introduced the academic stream of Fashion Technology at Senior Secondary which will further boost the job prospects for our students. Further the organization like IGNOU, NIOS, and SCERT have tutors in home science for their distance learning progammes and they have a demand for M.Sc. B.Ed. students.
INDUSTRY: Many units related to the manufacture of garments and their finishing are located in Delhi and adjoining states. Locations like okhla, Noida, Mayapuri, Gurgaon have many production units, Buying houses, fashion houses and they offer jobs to our students as Designer, sampling coordinator, Export Executive, Merchandiser, Production coordinator and fabric and garment technologist. With strong background of commercial pattern development, apparel designing, fabric science, marketing and extension education, the students are able to give a wholistic approach to the requirements of the garment industry. Our students are gainfully employed in orient craft, orient fashion, Shahi exports, Modelama, Fashion Highlights, Lintex, Sewa international, Balloons and many other such places.
Some students with good hand and creativity also further themselves as textile designers. With an additional knowledge of media of application they are able to design and execute them through various medium like painting, printing, tie and dye, batik, embroidery etc. the students are also working with designers like Stya Paul.
Students with technical bent of mind take up jobs in Textile Testing Labs. With knowledge on fabric construction and quality control, fibre science, Dyeing and printing they are befitting for these testing jobs where, fibre, yarn, fabric properties are tested. The dyed fabrics are also evaluated for their colour value and fastness properties.
ENTERPRENEURIAL ACTIVITY: The postgraduate students also take up entrepreneurial ventures. Students are heading knitwear units, garments manufacturing units, embroidered garment making units. Some of them have started designing and manufacturing lines in table linen, children's garments, ladies wear and gift items. Some of them have developed their own brands and are successful entrepreneurs.
People with a passion towards children with special needs are working for development of garments and accessories for different physical disabilities. They are customizing garments for individuals with specific requirements. In their own special way they are contributing towards the betterment of the society.
ENHANCING THE JOB PROSPECTUS OF GRADUATE STUDENTS: At present the job market is more suited for the postgraduate students as the in depth knowledge of the subject matter is provided to the students in the M.Sc. programme. From 2004-05 new syllabus bas been introduced at the graduation level. In the New Scheme the nomenclature for Textiles and clothing has been changed to Fabric & apparel science, which is more explicit in explaining the contents of the course. The new scheme includes subjects as follows:

Along with changes in the subject matter and number of papers offered, special attention has been made to incorporate standard testing equipment and procedures in practical classes. Also, an internship programme has been introduced at the graduation level to initiate the students of the working of the industry. A natural extension to the introduction of new syllabi would be to offer some short term Courses to the graduates which can equip the students to take up jobs in the textile industry. |
