HISTORY

 
 

2006-2010

  • Kilkari, a flexi-time programme for toddlers (6 months – 2 years) accompanied by a care giver, and Remedial classes for children with special needs (3 – 8 years) referred by formal schools have been two new additions to the programme.
  • RAKCSC team won gold medal at the “Bocce Game” organized by Special Olympics, Bharat.
  • Dhriti Sharma and Anshit Gupta won consolation prizes for painting in the category of Cerebral Palsy and Hearing Impaired children respectively in a competition organized by Very Special Arts, Delhi.
  • Suno-suno, the 2nd Annual Outreach event was organized on 18th December 2009. The focus of the event was to sensetise the youth towards the needs of persons with disability and their families.
  • Involvement of the parents of children attending SETU, THE Early Intervention Unit, in activities of the Centre lead to the formation of Parent Support group which was formally named SETU Shakti.
  • List of special schools, compiled zone-wise for Delhi, and also for outstation facilities for children with special needs has been very useful in guiding parents.
  • First batch of students from Institute for Physically Handicapped, Delhi were placed at the Centre for internship.
  • A new initiative of Systematic Early Training Unit (SETU) is the Information and Communication Unit (ICU). The major foci of this unit are dissemination of information and generating awareness about various disabilities and issues concerning persons with disabilities. To achieve this objective informative articles and write-ups are being put up on the notice board regularly. A list of schools and NGOs working in the area of disability and related fields has been compiled and is being updated regularly.
  • Teacher Training extended to young adults with special needs. One student undergoing training at the The Sri Ram School Vocational Training programme was placed for internship for at the Centre.
  • Four sets of Activity Manuals developed at the Centre by the teachers – ‘Let’s Start’, ‘Fun with Numbers’, ‘Let’s Learn A B C’, and ‘Aao Seekhen K, Kha, Ga’ Teachers are maintaining record of their experiences with a focus on preparing guidelines for usage by other professionals and caregivers.
  • Saksham, the Empowerment Mela for families and persons with disability was organized to provide a common platform for interaction with experts from related fields in November 2008. DD telecast and HT coverage
  • A write up about the Centre appeared in ‘Preschool Guide for parents’ and ‘Education Times’ published by India Today publishing group
  • Shashwat Sharma, a child from Nursery Group, won second prize in the cycling zonal games 2007 organised by Special Olympics Bharat – Delhi.
  • Nikita Narang, another child with special needs, stood fourth in the soft ball throw event in the Delhi Women Championship 2007organised by Special Olympics Bharat – Delhi.
  • Krishna Rajput and Shashwat Sharma won 1st prize in the respective categories in a painting competition at Sadhu Wasvani International School. The prize winning paintings appeared as the cover of Samvad, the School magazine.
  • A write up about the Centre appeared in ‘Focus On Children Under Six (FOCUS) Report’, a publication on various programmes being run by governmental and non governmental agencies for preschool children.
  • A widely circulated Hindi magazine ‘Sarita’ featured an article about SETU, the Systematic Early Intervention Unit at RAKCSC.
  • Miditech Pvt. Ltd. Producer of Galli Galii Sim Sim, a 30 minute programme for preschool children shot film footage of children involved in various physical activities for their series “Keep fit”.

2005 The Golden Jubilee Year

  • SETU- Systematic Early Training Unit launched on November 11 to provide early intervention to infants at risk and young children with disability. The programme was inaugurated by Ms. Gursharan Kaur, wife of the Prime Minister Mr. Manmohan Singh, and an ex-grandparent of the Centre. Dr. Kiran Bedi, also an ex-parent, was invited as the Guest of Honour.
  • “Unfolding- The story of an Early Childhood Development Programme” a 20- minute film documenting the evolution of the Centre from its inception in 1955 to its diverse activities at present produced
  • ‘Sunehra Safar’, a 2-day Interschool Children’s Workshop focusing on creative arts as a means of recreation and learning for children with varying ability levels was organized with the objective of networking and generating awareness in the community towards inclusive education.
  • ‘Swarnim Lamhe’, a cultural evening was organized wherein the alumnae and staff of the Centre had an opportunity to interact with each other. Scintillating musical performance by Euphoria, a popular band and fashion show by the RAKCSC students were the highlights of the evening.

2001-2005

  • An exhibition of painting by budding artists of the After School Care programme was held on April 30, 2004. Appreciation of the paintings and the exhibition was featured in Hindustan Times newspaper.
  • Fusih ur Rehman won two gold medals, one in 100 metre Assist Walk and the second in Soft Ball Throw event in The Athletic State Games 2005 organised by Special Olympics Committee, Delhi
  • Fusih ur Rehman won the Gold Medal in Assisted Walk and the Bronze medal for Soft Ball Throw in Athletic Intensive Training Camp organized by Special Olympics Delhi,
  • Program for 2 year olds started
  • A Video film featuring the Centre made for the National Open School under the Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development

1996-2000

  • Training to young adults with special needs as Teacher’s Assistants introduced
  • Video film of the Centre made by National Council for Teacher Education
  • Development of special garments and accessories for the disabled children- a DSA project, was extended to the Centre
  • A video film prepared by Deepayan for Teachers’ Resource Centre, NCERT
  • Computer Aided Learning (CAL) programs introduced; programs specially developed in house according to the Centre’s educational philosophy
  • The inclusive programme of the Centre featured in Kiran, a program on DD
  • Placement of teacher trainees from institutions like IGNOU and Mobile Crèches initiated
  • Modules for in-service teacher training programme as per the requirement of specific institutions developed

1991-1995

  • SPNS and affiliated programmes formally named as Rajkumari Amrit Kaur Child Study Centre
  • Saathi, the counselling cell and After-school Care programme for children aged 5-12 years started

1986-1990

  • Specialised Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy regularised
  • Infant Care Centre for children age 6 months – 3 years started

1981-1985

  • Summer Centre commence to keep children constructively occupied during vacations
  • Inclusive pre-school education programme for children with special needs launched

1976-1980

  • Day Care programme for children aged 3-5 years started
  • The Advisory Committee of the SPNS constituted

1971-1975

  • The Rajkumari Amrit Kaur Child Study Centre formally inaugurated in April

1966-1970

  • M.Sc degree course in Child Development started
  • Construction of the building of the Rajkumari Amrit Kaur Child Study Centre designed by Stein, Doshi and Bhalla commenced

1961-1965

  • Training extended to students undergoing paediatric refresher course at Safdurjung hospital
  • Funds raised by Rajkumari Amrit Kaur Memorial Committee to build a comprehensive Centre consisting of a Nursery School, Masters Degree course in Child Development and a Research wing in memory of Rajkumari Amrit Kaur
  • A donation of Rs 1,00,000 offered by D.D. Puri Charity Trust and the Nursery School named as Saraswati Puri Nursery School

1955-1960

  • Regular workshops, lectures and refresher courses for teachers initiated
  • Parent Teacher Association formed
  • Training of students from other organisations like College of Nursing started
  • Centre shifted from the Department of Education to 5, Sikandra Road
  • Tie up with Delhi Public School, Lady Irwin School and Queen Mary’s School for admissions
  • Upper age increased to 6 yrs and Lower KG introduced
  • The Lady Irwin College Nursery and Kindergarten School started
