  OVERVIEW  
     
 
The Food and Nutrition Department was the first Post-Graduate Department of the Lady Irwin College Having started in a modest way in 1958, it has produced over 750 post graduates, including Ph.Ds. the department has come a long way since its inception, with high standard of academic and infrastructural development. Today it offers M.Sc. in Food and Nutrition in three areas of specialization, namely Human Nutrition, Institutional Food Management and Dietetics and Food science, with internship/industrial training and a one-year diploma in Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition. In addition it offers Ph.D. programmes in all these areas. Currently there are 15 students on roll of Ph.D. programme.
 
     
 
The excellent academic programme of the department is enriched by the laboratory experience, as well as community outreach activities, supported by easy access to a department library, computers and other necessary facilities. The different courses have been expanded and diversified to meet the emerging needs and challenges in the area of Food and Nutrition. This has been achieved through not only course work but with emphasis given to research, community work focusing on capacity building of underprivileged section of the population, seminars, internship/training in hospitals, food industries and related organizations, educational tours, conferences and workshops.
 
 
 
 

The master's programme is further strengthened by a six-week summer placement in different organizations such as CARE, CFTRI, NIPCCD, USAID, NDRI, Nirula's, Nutrition Resource Center, Agra. With the rich experience and confidence thus gained by the students, the post-graduates of the department are now placed in important positions with various organizations like Government, International Agencies, NGOs, Food Industries, Catering establishment, Hospitals and Teaching Institutions in India and abroad. They are working as researchers; teachers; public health nutritionists; research and community based programme officers; nutrition consultants and experts in food product development and quality control. Keeping in mind the dual role of women as a homemaker and professional, several of the alumnae have established themselves as entrepreneurs.
 
 
 
 
The Food and Nutrition Department endeavors to achieve excellence in teaching and research for out reach to Community, Industry and Institutions to ensure promotive health for all.
 
 
 
 
Growth & Milestoness
 
 
1958: Master's degree in Food and Nutrition introduced.

1959: Food and Nutrition block built.

1972: Post-graduate Diploma in Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition introduced.

1983: Silver jubilee of Food & Nutrition Department.

1998: Silver Jubilee Diploma in Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition (DDPHN).

2002: State of art Saroja Nutrition Studio inaugurated.
