An annual activity, Sanjam Randhawa Memorial Conference, was initiated in 2003 in the memory of Ms. Sanjam Randhawa, the founder head of the Department. Various themes for the conference have been textile traditional in textiles, natural dyes-contemporary perspective, clothing for special needs, etc
Annual fashion shows organized by the Department both at college level and at International Conference on Apparel and Home Textiles (ICAHT) organized by Okhla Garment & Textile Cluster (OGTC) from the past 5 years, exposes the students to entire gamut of activities involved in the Development of a garment from its concept to a finished product and its effective display.
Annually a crafts mela is organized by the Department to sensitize students to appreciate traditional textiles of India. Mela organized each year on a specific theme provides a platform for interface between students and craftsmen. Master craftsmen excelling in their fields are invited to showcase their master pieces and they often teach their skills to the students. The mela is organized on themes like use of natural dyes in traditional textiles, embroidered textiles of India, Weaves of India etc.
With a view to enhance professional skills and academies expertise, the students undergo a internship programme in the industry (Textile or Garment), research organisations and museums. This gives students hands on experience of the functioning of the textile sector and enables the development of collaborative alliances with reputed industrial houses
Experts from various fields are invited to deliver lecture to supplement the academic knowledge of the students. This also helps to broaden their perspective.
Workshops and seminars:
Participation in seminar/workshop outside the college is encouraged. At the same time the Department also makes an effort to organize such Seminars to keep the students abreast with the latest trends and developments.
Extension and outreach programme:
The Department undertakes such programme on a regular basis to develop communication skills of the students. At the same time, these programmes aim to provide income-generating opportunities for rural or economically weaker women. These outreach programmes intend to change the attitudes and practices of the people.
Information about judicious selection and buying practices of textiles has been prepared in the form of Ready Reckoners. These booklets are product of research carried out with regards to the consumer awareness. The consumers are being trained to make appropriate selection of textile products. This work is being collaboration of various NGO’s, Textile Committee, Textile Association of India and NITRA.
