Research is an important component of teaching and extension in the department. Over a period of more than four decades, the department has a vast array of research inputs. The areas cover a broad spectrum of issues reflecting the needs and concerns of changing times. The researches primarily focus on the developmental needs of families and communities in general and women, adolescents and the old in particular. Major issues covered in the researches are - reproductive health, HIV/Aids and community health; finance, consumer & marketing studies ; gender studies; literacy and non-formal education; technology, training and development studies; communication and media studies; housing, built environment and ergonomics research; furniture and space design; management of resources - shared resources and environment studies; farm food production, post harvest technology and horticulture studies; entrepreneurship studies; impact of liberalization and globalization on women and consumers.

Extension and communication is the backbone and thrust area for all the researches. This is evident in most of the researches having prepared IEC material based on the findings of their researches in keeping with the real Objectives of becoming a source of successful change agents. Even where a communication kit has not been developed, there are a wide array photographs, or statistical findings to prove the point.
