Human Development & Childhood Studies  - OVERVIEW

The Department of Child Development, established in 1970, prepares students for careers that involve working with individuals, families and organisations and help them engage with developmental challenges and life-cycle issues. The multi-disciplinary curriculum draws upon the disciplines of Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, Paediatrics and Social Work. With people as our subject, learning is enhanced by the application of theory issues in the world around us. Theoretical perspectives that illustrate developmental patterns, appropriate methods of research inquiry along with practical work with children and families form the major constituents of the course.

The programme seeks to apply developmental theory and study research issues such as cultural diversity, gender equity, and academic achievement, with reference to typical and high-risk populations. Students are guided to examine empirical evidence about physical and motor development, language development, social and relational development, emotional competence and cultural differences.

The Department is committed to the development of professionals equipped to work with children from varied backgrounds. Apart from academic excellence, the Department reaches out to the community through programmes such as the Rajkumari Amrit Kaur Child Study Centre and The Enabling Centre and faculty as consultant in different GO and NGO settings. An eclectic curriculum with participatory and field intensive pedagogical interventions contributes towards an integrated development of individuals enrolled in the course.
