B.Ed. (Home Science Education)
The one-year Bachelor of Education programme started in the year 1952 to strengthen the Lady Irwin College graduate professionally. A popular option over five decades, the programme maintains a spirit of preparing competent teachers. The focus includes various facets, viz. skill training in teaching, mastery of classroom management techniques, competence to handle children with special needs, ability to establish warm interpersonal relationships within the class, development of communication skills and competencies leading to reflective thinking, skill training in various Home Science and Science related work experience, sensitization to community needs and community work, skill in construction and appraisal of various evaluation devices, and development of teaching learning materials. The close interaction between students and teachers, and the participatory nature of the programme, enables the students to gain confidence and selfreliance, permitting students to manage their own affairs in a democratic etho.
The programme cultivates leadership qualities and develops positive virtues like co-operation, sincerity and dedication. In keeping pace with the speed at which knowledge is generated and applied, the emphasis is on 'learning how to learn'. Training in the use of library, audio and video programmes and computer literacy form an important component of instructional strategies.
The interns of the course find placement in various schools and other allied institutions and are held in high esteem. The alumnae cherish memories of the fruitful year spent at the department.
B.Ed. Special Education (MR)
Lady Irwin College, in its Platinum Jubilee year (2007-2008) introduced the one-year Bachelor of Special Education - Mental Retardation (MR) programme. This program me is recogn ized by Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) and is affiliated to the University of Delhi.
The focus of this course is on preparing individuals to work as resource room teachers in regular schools for children who are slow learners, low ach ievers as well as children with other learning problems. They would also develop expertise as special educators for working with multi-disciplinary teams, inclusive educators, itinerant special educators, vocational rehabilitators, community-based rehabilitation managers, home bound instructors and parent-counselors. Theywould also become coordinators/ Incharges /administrators of special schools for children with intellectual impairment.
The B.Ed Special Education (MR) graduates find placements in special, integrated and inclusive schools, NCOs and <?ther allied institutions.
Career options
The students/interns of the course find an easy placement in various schools and other allied institutions and are held in high esteem. They are recruited as PCT Home Science teachers, TCT Science and Home Science teachers and Primary Teachers in various private and state-run schools. They work as class teachers, teach various school subjects including vocational subjects such as meal planning and fashion studies and conduct various SUPW activities. Quite a few students work as counselors in schools as well.
The allied institutions like women's polytechnics, Nursery Teacher Training institutions, DIETs., SCERT, NCERT, NUEPA and various NCO training and research organisations recruit our interns for various jobs like teaching, training and research. The comprehensive and focused training in the course enables our students to handle various jobs/responsibilities in a competent manner.
